I was fortunate enough to have been at the San Diego Zoo shortly after new flamingo chicks were hatched. Not exactly sure how shortly, but they still had their baby colors so it couldn’t have been very long. They had them in with the rest of the flamingoes, meaning mother and chick were able to spend quality time as they would in the wild. It was interesting to watch the nurturing that happens in the flamingo community, as all of the birds seemed to be looking out for the little ones. Here we see a chick struggling to get up and walk on its own, and its mother providing encouragement. “You can do it, little dude. You can do it!”
